Workshop Introduction
Thinking Aloud is an idea inspired by Cognitive Psychology and by Vygotsky’s ideas of learning. First, as teachers demonstrate a task, such as solving a multiplication problem, we think aloud as we do so. Next, we show students the ‘script’ we followed as we were thinking aloud. Then, students use the same script as they think aloud to do related tasks. After thinking aloud with the same script multiple times, students come to internalize the script. Students seldom have the habit of thinking aloud. Thus, they need time to develop the habit. Scripts give them confidence and provide them the vocabulary and grammar help they may need.
This workshop will explain the rationale for thinking aloud and demonstrate different types of scripts in different subject areas. Workshop participants will have time to develop and trial their own scripts for the students. |
